The race was established in 1962 and originally called the Ballymoss Stakes with the first two runnings staged at Tipperary. In 1984 the race was renamed the Rogers Gold Cup and since 1993 it has been known as the Tattersalls Gold Cup. It has held Group 1 status for the last 20 years and has been restricted to older horses since 1985. Three horses have won the race twice and the most recent to do so was Al Kazeem who won in 2013 and 2015 having spent 2014 at stud. So You Think was successful in 2011 when he went off at 1/7 and 2012 while Yankee Gold won in 1976 and 1977.

Just three horses took part in 2006 when the previous year’s Arc de Triomphe winner Hurricane Run made the journey from France to defeat the top class international racemare Alexander Goldrun. A number of odds on chances have been beaten in this race over the last 30 years. The subsequent Arc de Triomphe winner Dylan Thomas was beaten at 1/2 when second in 2007 while Dr Massini refused to race when going off a 4/7 chance for the 1997 edition of this race.
