Dermot Weld has a select team for the upcoming Longines Irish Champions Weekend, with Search For A Song the star name in the Comer Group International Irish St Leger at the Curragh on Sunday.
The Galileo filly has quickly developed into a smart performer and she stayed on strongly to win the British EBF & Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes at York last time. This will be her first shot at a mile and three quarters.
"She's a good filly," Weld said Monday morning. "She pops off top of the ground and it's pretty important for her. Also, you're taking on the males and older horses too, so I'd want everything in her favour. She's my intended runner in the Leger."
Weld has an excellent record in the Group 2 Moyglare "Jewels" Blandford Stakes, and he has Tarnawa for that race on Sunday.
"I've won it the past three years and she goes there with very good prospects," he said of the Shamardal filly.
"I'll likely have Broad Street in the Kilternan Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday," he added, though that colt has an alternative engagement in the Irish St Leger at the Curragh.
Weld won four successive renewals of the final Classic of the year with the legendary Vinnie Roe from 2001 to 2004 and scored a more recent success in the race with Voleuse De Coeurs in 2013.
