DNG to sponsor Apprentice Jockeys Derby

The Curragh is delighted to announce that Douglas Newman Good (DNG) will become the new title sponsor of the Apprentice Jockeys Derby taking place on day 1 of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival on Friday evening, 24th June.

The prestigious contest over 12 furlongs will carry record prize money of €30,000 this year and is undoubtedly the race that every apprentice jockey aspires to win.

Previous recent winning jockeys include Gavin Ryan, Dylan Brown McMonagle and Ben Curtis, while Luke McAteer won the race last year aboard Beyond Happy.

The sponsor will also present the winning jockey with a €1,000 bursary towards a working holiday with a leading trainer to further their experience abroad this winter.

The launch took place at The Racing Academy and Centre of Education in Kildare Town, which has developed the careers of many leading jockeys since it opened in 1973 including Johnny Murtagh, Seamus Heffernan, Conor O’Dwyer and Chris Hayes.

Orla McMorrow, Deputy Chief Executive CEO said, “DNG is delighted to be the title sponsor of the Apprentice Jockeys Derby, 2022. As Irish horse racing continues to grow from strength to strength with the very best of horses, trainers and jockeys, DNG is also proud to play a part in the successful champion jockeys career by pioneering a €1,000 bursary for an overseas training holiday.  We look forward to many more memorable races to come and wish all the apprentice jockeys the very best of luck on the day.”

Curragh Racecourse Racing and Sponsorship Manager Evan Arkwright commented, “We are delighted to welcome DNG to The Curragh for the first time and look forward to a long and successful partnership highlighted by their support of the most prestigious race for apprentice jockeys in the calendar.  The race is the most sought after for aspiring champion jockeys and their initiative to award the winning rider with a bursary will make the race even more special this year.”
