Sioux Nation wins Keeneland Phoenix Stakes
August 13, 2017
Aidan O’Brien landed the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes for the 16th time at the Curragh on Sunday afternoon, as the Ryan Moore-ridden Sioux Nation held off the persistent surge of unbeaten favourite Beckford to record a narrow victory.
An improving son of Scat Daddy, who won the race for the second year in a row after the victory of Caravaggio last year, he followed up his victory at Royal Ascot with a battling success here as he and the favourite went away inside the final furlong with only half-a-length separating them after a good scrap inside the last.
The winner may well return to the Curragh for a crack at the Goffs Vincent OBrien National Stakes next month.
Aidan OBrien and Ryan Moore completed a treble with the victory of Washington DC in the Group 3 At The Races Phoenix Sprint Stakes.
Holding up the son of Zoffany off the pace, Moore was dependent on a gap appearing at the right time. In the end he had to manufacture his own gap to an extent, and it couldn’t have come more in the nick of time as he quickened well inside the last furlong to just touch off his stable companion Cougar Mountain by half-a-length.
Little was known about Eddie Lynam’s newcomer Muirin going into Sunday’s Loder Irish EBF 2-y-o Fillies Race at the Curragh except that she held an entry in the Moyglare Stud Stakes next month, but a lot more is known now after she registered a taking debut success.
Ridden by Wayne Lordan, this quite imposing daughter of Born To Sea made up her ground quite easily to challenge inside the furlong out and just had to be pushed out hands and heels close home to get the better of long odds-on favourite Sizzling. That Moyglare entry next month might just be taken up
