February 8, 2017

Comer Group International have agreed to extend their commitment of the Irish St Leger and help boost total prize money for the Group One Classic to a record 500,000 euro making it one of the richest races of its kind in Europe.  The race over 14 furlongs is the centre piece of Day 2 of Longines Irish Champions Weekend on Sunday 10th September and has strong links with the Melbourne Cup.

The race will be titled the Comer Group International Irish St Leger this year, having been previously been titled as the Palmerstown House Estate Irish St Leger since the Comer Group first sponsored the race in 2014.

Comer Group International is a leading property company with substantial development and investment interests in a number of market sectors including: luxury residential homes, office parks, retail parks, hotels and leisure facilities.

Luke Comer said: “We are delighted to renew our support of the Curragh as they embark on their very exciting redevelopment. We look forward to working with the team at the racecourse helping to ensure that the Irish St Leger remains one of the most prestigious and important Classic Races in Europe”.

Wicklow Brave trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Frankie Dettori created a shock result when beating Order of St George to win the race last year.

The Irish St Leger has been won in the past by such well known performers as Vintage Crop, Vinnie Roe, Yeats and Brown Panther.

Comer Group International will continue to sponsor the Irish St Leger Trial Stakes on 19th August and have also added the Curragh Cup on Sunday 2nd July to create an exciting series which will significantly enhance the race program for staying horses in Ireland.  They will also sponsor two other races during the season in memory of family members.

Evan Arkwright Commercial Manager of the Curragh Racecourse commented: “We are very grateful to both Luke and Brian Comer for their generous support and their increased sponsorship will ensure we can attract the best staying horse from Europe to compete at the Curragh”
