October 16, 2012
Tommy Carmody and Niall McCullagh were awarded with the Curragh Racecourse leading training and riding performance of 2012 at the Tipperary Crystal supported Curragh Racing Awards which took place at L’Officina Restaurant in Kildare Village on Monday 15th October.
The winning performance of Royal Diamond in the Gain Horse Feeds Irish St Leger clinched the overall award for both of them. The six year old horse showed remarkable improvement throughout the year having only joined the Curragh based Carmody team earlier this year, culminating in his victory in the final Irish classic of the year in September.
They were selected from the five monthly winners by a group of five leading journalists, Mark Costello, Deputy Editor of The Irish Field, Gary O’Brien of At The Races, RTE presenter Robert Hall, Robbie Irwin of RTE and Richard Forrestal of the Irish Independent.
Other awards were presented to leading trainer and jockey of the season Aidan O’Brien and Joseph O’Brien and a special achievement award was accepted by Dermot Weld for Famous Name, a winner of seven high class races at the Curragh including three in 2012.
