May 2015: On Saturday 27th June, The Curragh Racecourse will celebrate a huge milestone with the 150th running of The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby when a record attendance of close to 30,000 is expected to throng the Kildare racecourse. In addition to world-class horses, the event, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free since 2008, will showcase the finest millinery and fashion across the country confirming the Irish Derby’s iconic position of style and influence over the past 150 years.

Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Day is the feature of the 3 day festival which kicks off on Friday evening 26th June with the DoneDeal Derby Friday hoedown with great racing and a concert by country music star Nathan Carter. Derby Festival Family Race Day takes place on Sunday 28th June featuring top class racing including the Pretty Polly Stakes and an exciting variety of free activities for children

One of the greatest people-watching events in the country and Ireland’s answer to Royal Ascot, this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby promises to be a glorious celebration of Ireland’s most historic race with many special events planned including. A specially commissioned book co-authored by Jacqueline O’Brien, wife of the legendary Vincent O’Brien, which features images and stories from the Irish Derby over the past 150 years including famous attendees like Jerry Hall, Richard Gere, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and legendary crooner Bing Crosby. A highlight of Derby Day 2015 will be Bing’s daughter Mary Crosby who will travel to Ireland with her family and join the crowd in singing ‘When Irish Eyes are Smiling’, following in the footsteps of her father who spontaneously broke into song following the success of his horse Meadow Court in 1965.

To mark this landmark anniversary, The Curragh Racecourse has introduced a specially priced ticket of €25 when booked before 24th June. For those who want to avail of transport from Dublin, the Curragh have made it easy with return luxury coaches from Dublin right to the track for an additional €10 – when booked before 24th June. Under 25s and Seniors cost €20.

Style and millinery will be celebrated on Derby Day with the hats, shoes and dresses as colourful and creative as the jockeys’ silks! The grandstands will be packed with an array of statement prints, pretty florals, elegant dresses and awe-inspiring hats. This year’s Style

Ambassador, TV Presenter Amanda Byram will join the judging panel to choose this year’s Most Stylish lady. The winner will walk away with the holiday of a lifetime to Dubai, courtesy of Dubai Duty Free comprising five glorious nights in Dubai Duty Free’s own, 5 star hotel, The Jumeirah Creekside as well as €1,000 to spend at the multi award-winning Dubai Duty Free and return flights. The prize also includes a spectacular statement piece of diamond jewellery from Boodles and a luxurious overnight stay at The Marker Hotel in Dublin.

Many of the world’s top horses and jockeys will compete over all three days of the Festival with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby attracting the crème de la crème of the equine world who will compete to win one of the ultimate accolades in Irish sport with €1.25 million in prize money. Last year’s winner ‘Australia’ is only the second horse since 2002 to complete the English-Irish Derby double since 2002. There will be plenty of pageantry at the festival with an exhibition of iconic photographs, footage of great derby moments on screens throughout the racecourse and presentations to some of the legends of the race while leading soprano Celine Byrne will perform the Irish National anthem accompanied by the army band.

The Curragh Racecourse will play host to an array of live bands and DJs throughout the Dubai Duty Free Derby weekend, creating a festival atmosphere hosted by Hector O hEochagain including live performances from country music star Nathan Carter. Leading Chef Natalie Collins from the Silver Restaurant in Newbridge, whose family have a long association with The Curragh Racecourse will be one of the many participants in the Derby Food Paddock serving the best dishes from some of Ireland’s leading food producers. Racegoers can enjoy a huge variety of dishes located in the heart of the action beside the parade ring over all three days.
