Australia heads strong list of Aidan O’Brien challengers for
Juddmonte Beresford Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday week
THE Group Two Juddmonte Beresford Stakes is the feature event at the Curragh tomorrow week, Sunday, 29th December. The one mile juvenile contest is supplemented by the Group Three C.L. Weld Park Stakes, The Listed Irish Field Loughbrown Stakes and the Listed Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital Blenheim Stakes.
First sponsored by Juddmonte Farms back in 1988, the Beresford Stakes is steeped in history and past winners of the race Assert (1981), Sadler’s Wells (1983), Azamour (2003), Sea The Stars (2008) and St Nicholas Abbey (2009). The race was added to the Breeders Cup Challenge Series in 2012.
Aidan O’Brien has won this event on no less than 12 occasions and the Master of Ballydoyle is again well represented this year with 16 of the 29 horses remaining in the race. O’Brien’s Australia shot to the top of the market for next year’s Epsom Derby when scorching home at Leopardstown two weeks ago, and the son of Galileo and Ouija Board remains in the race for Ballydoyle as is Giovanni Boldini, Geoffrey Chaucer, Illinois and Kingfisher.
Dermot Weld’s Free Eagle, which finished runner-up to Australia at Leopardstown, has also been left in the race, while Exogenesis (Ger Lyons), Altruistic (Johnny Murtagh), Hidden Oasis (David Wachman) and the Charles Appleby- trained Outstrip are other notable horses up for consideration. Supplementary entries for this race close at 12 noon next Tuesday, 24th September.
