Aidan O’Brien to have strong team in Irish Guineas

May 15, 2014

CHAMPION trainer Aidan O’Brien has nominated War Command, Michaelmas, Fountain Of Youth and Great White Eagle as his four probable runners in the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh on Saturday, 24th May, while he confirmed that Marvellous and Palace will represent Ballydoyle in the Etihad Airways Irish 1000 Guineas a day later.
Speaking at Naas on Wednesday evening, O’Brien said: “That is our likely line-up for both Guineas and they are all in good form and working well. Magician and Hall Of Mirrors will definitely contest the Tattersalls Gold Cup and Due Diligence who won well here tonight may join them”. Meanwhile, O’Brien confirmed that Darwin will contest the Group Three Greenlands Stakes on Saturday. “Darwin is working well and is on course for the Greenland Stakes,” he said.

Dermot Weld, who has Alkasser, Free Eagle, Weld Arab and Mustajeeb in the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas, indicated that the latter would contest the race. “The plan is to run Mustajeeb but we will make a final decision early next week,” he said. Weld also has seven entries in the Etihad Airways Irish 1000 Guineas, including Afternoon Sunlight, Balansiya, Tested and Vote Often. “I not sure which of them will run at the moment, but as is the case with the 2000 Guineas, we will make a decision early next week.”

Jim Bolger has four entries for the 1000 Guineas in Ceisteach, Heart Focus, Peony Fairy and Plamas. “Heart Focus will be our representative in the race,” commented Bolger, who added that last year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby hero Trading Leather was “top of the list” among his four entries for the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Bolger has three entries (Answered, Fiscal Focus and Mandatario) in the 2000 Guineas, but no decision has bee taken yet regarding their participation.

Meanwhile, trainer Paul Deegan said that Prince Of All was on course for a tilt at the Irish 2000 Guineas. “That is the plan but he needs good ground to be seen at his best so hopefully the weather will pick up,” he said. “Avenue Gabriel will definitely contest the 1000 Guineas. She has come on a good deal for her last run and I could not be happier with her,”

Ger Lyons has confirmed that Obliterator will contest the 2000 Guineas. “The horse is in great form and will definitely take his chance,” he said.
