11 runners declared for Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas
May 21, 2015
English 2,000 Guineas winner Gleneagles (Ryan Moore) tops the field of 11 colts declared this morning for Saturday’s Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh in which his trainer Aidan O’Brien will bid for a remarkable 10th win in the race.
O’Brien is responsible for three of the 11 runners with Smuggler’s Cove (Seamie Heffernan) and The Warrior (Joseph O’Brien) his other representatives in a field that has attracted three British trained runners.
Richard Hannon Jnr will look to emulate his father and namesake who won the race three times with Don’t Forget Me, Tirol and most recently with Canford Cliffs in 2010, when he saddles two runners, Ivawood (Richard Hughes) and Lexington Times (Fran Berry), while there is plenty of confidence surrounding Roger Varian’s runner Belardo (James Doyle).
Convergence (Colin Keane) and Endless Drama (Andrea Atzeni) have been included in the final field by in form trainer Ger Lyons who goes in search of his first Irish Classic, while the field is completed by Dermot Weld’s Tombelaine (Pat Smullen), Kevin Prendergast’s Mohaayed (Chris Hayes) and the Pat Shanahan trained Carbon Dating (Declan McDonogh).
Also confirmed this morning was the news that Sole Power will run in Saturday’s Group 2 Weatherby’s Ireland Greenlands Stakes.
The multiple Group 1 winning sprinter last ran in Ireland in the Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh in August 2011 and his trainer Eddie Lynam, who won the Greenlands with Slade Power last year, said this morning; “We have decided to skip the Temple Stakes at Haydock in favour of the Curragh on Saturday where the ground is good to yielding and we are happy with that.
“I wanted to get a run into him this weekend as his main aim is to return to Royal Ascot to try and win the King’s Stand Stakes for a third time.
“It will be nice to see him run in Ireland again after such a long time and Richard Hughes will ride him. We are looking forward to it.”
